How Voterexy could remove ballot box dependency

Future vision. This page describes how Voterexy could support future national elections in Papua New Guinea. Voterexy is an independent voting platform for organizations such as NGOs, churches and community groups. We are actively seeking approval from the Electoral Commission of Papua New Guinea and the Papua New Guinea Government; however, Voterexy is not currently affiliated with or endorsed by either, and is not used for official government elections.

Physical ballot boxes create single points of failure: they can be missing, stolen or destroyed. When that happens, physical votes are irrevocably lost and trust in the process is eroded.

"During elections, voter ballot boxes have been known to be missing, sometimes stolen and on occasion destroyed... Traceability and accountability must be a foundation of our elections."

Excerpt from Voterexy EOI White Paper used here to explain operational risk and the rationale for digital alternatives.

Problem summary

The practical consequences of ballot‑box failure include lost votes, inflated or ghost voter counts, and long, error‑prone reconciliation steps between physical counts and registration records. These failures directly reduce voter confidence and suppress future turnout.

How Voterexy eliminates that dependency

  • Digital recording: votes are recorded as tamper‑evident ledger entries rather than physical papers.
  • Distributed storage: multiple independent replicas prevent data loss even if a location is compromised.
  • Real‑time publication: results and audit bundles are published so stakeholders can verify without waiting for physical delivery.
  • Reconciliation is automated by cryptographic proofs, removing error‑prone manual matching with registration rolls.

Illustrative impact

The chart below is illustrative and shows how migrating from physical ballot boxes to Voterexy reduces the risk of permanent vote loss.

Risk of permanent vote loss 25% Risk after Voterexy 0%

Example numbers shown above are illustrative: legacy systems may experience non‑zero permanent loss rates, which Voterexy drives close to zero through replication, verifiable publication and automated reconciliation.

Operational checklist

  • Enroll and verify voter identities prior to the election.
  • Deploy replicated storage and independent observers to host replicas.
  • Publish signed audit bundles at close-of‑polls for public verification.
  • Provide a public results portal with proofs so voters and auditors can independently confirm outcomes.
